Tree-mendous effort despite Great British downpour

A group of hardy volunteers braved the Great British weather to lend a hand at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham’s Community Orchard.

Nine volunteers from city centre construction company, Turner and Townsend, spent hours in the pouring rain and muddy earth on their annual ‘Charity day’, to help prune and preen the community orchard, located on-site of the hospital.

The Orchard will give patients and staff a place to relax and reflect in the peace and quiet of the garden.

The green-fingered group spent the day creating a cascade to collect rain water, which will function as a water supply for the plants in the orchard.

Luke Tudor, Consultant at Turner and Townsend, said: “We’re really grateful to QEHB Charity for hosting us. Regardless of the weather, I think I speak for all of the team when I say it’s been a pleasure contributing to such a great cause.”

Michael Tivey, Fundraising Officer at QEHB Charity, said: “We are extremely grateful to all of the volunteers from Turner and Townsend who gave up their time to battle through the downpour to give other people, including patients and staff, something special that can be enjoyed for years to come.

“I’m pleased that despite the weather spirits were not dampened and the team enjoyed the task.”
