VIP Day returns for 2016

(Pictured: some of our VIPs from 2015!)

QEHB Charity held its first ‘VIP Day’ in February of 2015. Children at primary schools from across the West Midlands were invited to dress up as their favourite ‘VIP’. From princesses to firefighters, doctors to pirates, our VIPs varied widely as hundreds of schoolchildren took part in the event to raise thousands of pounds for children with cancer at the QE. The event was so popular that it is returning to schools on Friday, 12th February, this year!

‘VIP Day’ was designed as a fundraising event for QEHB Charity’s ‘VIP Treatment Appeal’. Every year, hundreds of children come to the QE for a six-week course of radiotherapy. This gruelling treatment, scary at any age, is exacerbated due to children having to be anaesthetised, the reasoning behind this being that, during radiotherapy, the patient has to be motionless; the risk of children moving warrants the use of anaesthetic. As a result of being placed under anaesthetic, the children often feel disorientated and frightened upon awaking.

Due to this, QEHB Charity launched the ‘VIP Treatment Appeal’, and asked for your help to raise £250,000 to make the radiotherapy department child-friendly. The refurbished department, opening in April of 2016, will be home to a play area, waiting room for family members, and child-friendly recovery room.
