Couple tie the knot in surprise wedding

Majella Wynne was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2018 and has since been receiving treatment on Ward 19 at Heartlands Hospital. Now, she has decided to raise an incredible amount of money in the most unique way.

Majella and her now husband, Christopher, decided to raise money for Heartlands Hospital Charity with all of their friends and family by tying the knot in a secret wedding!

The couple planned a fundraising event, telling all of their friends and family where to be and what time, which ended up being their wedding reception.

On July 20, Majella and Christopher got married at Solihull Registry Office with their close family and then went to Solihull Moors Football Club to celebrate with their friends who thought they were attending a fundraiser for Ward 19.

Talking about the day, Majella said: “I’ve always thought about a surprise wedding, I wanted to invite guests to a party and surprise them by getting married earlier in the day. I didn’t want the formality of a wedding.

“I was feeling very low and needed something positive to focus on, we decided a few weeks into planning a fundraising event that this was the perfect opportunity to put our wedding into action.

“It turned out to be a great day as there was no expectations from the guests and no pressure on us, we just did what worked for us!”

Around 150 people attended their wedding reception and Majella and her husband raised an incredible £1,411 with the help of their family and friends, and even Ward 19 staff, Manos who is Majella’s consultant, and Rachel, a Health Care Assistant.

The company that Christopher works for, Plastic Omnium in Hams Hall, have also been fundraising for Ward 19 after hearing of the care Majella has received on the ward. The team there have taken on the three peaks challenge and have raised an additional £1,200!

Sian Averill, Fundraising Manager at Heartlands Hospital Charity, said: “Majella and Christopher chose the most special way to raise money for Ward 19 at the hospital and we are so grateful that they chose to share their day with us.

“All of the money raised will go to Ward 19 to provide added extras for patients just like Majella. Thank you so much for sharing your day with us and raising such an amazing amount of money!”
