Family raise funds in memory of Patricia

Patricia Hunt was a loving, family-orientated person before a tragic accident happened and she sadly passed away on the Critical Care Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. Now, her family and friends want to give back to the staff who cared for her before she passed away.

Patricia’s husband, Peter, and sister, Ellen, decided to raise money at her funeral by holding a collection instead of receiving flowers and raised an incredible £2,157.28 for the Critical Care Unit at the hospital.

Patricia had a fall at hers and Peter’s home in Dudley which meant she needed to be admitted to QEHB’s Critical Care Unit. Her family was her world and she made sure they all saw each other as much as they could and always organised the get-togethers on both sides of the family.

Ellen Layder, Patricia’s sister, said: “Tricia’s accident was so unjust, so quick, so life-changing, and then life-taking. She was a brave lady. The care Tricia received was unparalleled. The whole team, from the lady who operated the door release, to the nurses who looked after her 24 hours a day, to the doctors who monitored her.

“Their knowledge, compassion, dedication, empathy and the dignity afforded to Tricia, and the family who were with her, could not have been more appropriate. For that, Peter and I will be eternally grateful.”

Originally from London, Patricia had moved to Dudley after she met Peter and continued their life living in Birmingham. She worked for Network Rail for 40 years before her passing and her family said this just showed her “loyal” qualities.

Ellie Pocock, Fundraising Assistant for QEHB Charity, said: “We at the Charity are so sorry for the loss of Patricia, she really did sound like an amazing person. We are so glad that the care she received in hospital led you to think of us when making a donation.

“The Critical Care Unit are extremely grateful for this donation and it means that they will be able to provide more added extras that go ‘over and above’ what the NHS can fund for patients and families just like Patricia’s.”
